Abilene is the county seat of Taylor County and was first established in 1881 as a stock shipping point by cattleman on the Texas and Pacific Railway. The booming economy of Abilene was first based on the agricultural and livestock sectors but has now has switched over to education, healthcare, government, and manufacturing jobs and businesses. The top employer in Abilene is Dyess Air Force Base, which is located on the west side of the city.
